Title:
Easing the Burden
Location:
Rift Valley, Kenya
Born in 2001 from a decade-long partnership between the Indiana University School of Medicine and Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya, AMPATH now includes a consortium of North American medical schools whose graduate students often spend a residency in Eldoret working alongside Kenyan medical students and doctors at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
To the more than 140,000 HIV-positive clients served by AMPATH's urban and rural health clinics and over 500,000 Kenyans who have welcomed community-based social workers into their homes for education, counseling, and HIV testing, AMPATH has led the way in developing an academic, community-based model designed to provide healthcare, education, food security, and job training to hundreds of thousands of Kenyans in an effort to curb the spread of HIV in a country with one of the world's highest HIV prevalences and ease the burden of living with HIV for those brave enough to accept help in a highly-stigmatized environment.
