Muslims in Estonia.
Photographer: Annika Haas
Exhibit Title: Muslims in Estonia.
The Muslim community that until then had peacefully lived and worked in Estonia (already since the 16th century) started to receive threats from our own Estonians, who placed equal sign between Islam and ISIS. Throughout centuries, the Muslim community in Estonia has been loyal to the country they live in. There is no radical Islamism. Meanwhile, the majority of Estonians have become extremely radical in their attitude towards Muslims.
My aim was to photograph the Islamic people living in Estonia, who express their love and warmth towards Estonia. I intentionally photographed them on the backdrop of a grey and bleak landscape that is so characteristic of Estonia, which, in my photos, stands for symbolic representation of the masses in Estonian who have now taken a negative and even hostile attitude towards entire Muslim community.
