Papua is the most eastern province of Indonesia and borders Papua New Guinea. Currently, Papua has the highest percentage of AIDS/HIV infection outside of Africa. Clearly, it has the highest in Asia and 20 times the national average. This is mainly due to lack of government intervention, education, polygamous culture, poverty and poor economy, and its mountainous region. The stigma against the use of condoms is still strong. Furthermore, the stigma against people with HIV/AIDS is even greater. Many people are scared to come forward for help due to fear of rejection or retribution from family members and the community. Those with the highest risk are age 20-29 and are mobile and sexually active. In addition, wives are also at great risk since the husbands tend to have sex outside of marriage or sometimes have several wives. Looking at the trend, 1 million people (6% of population) will be infected with HIV/AIDS by 2010.
