Najib Joe Hakim works as a freelance photographer and photojournalist. He just concluded a yearlong political art fellowship at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco through which he developed "Re-Imagining Palestine" a handbook for becoming a pro-Palestinian activist.
He recently completed Palestine Diary, an exhibition of his 1978-79 images taken during his 18-month stay in Jerusalem, annotated with excerpts from the journal he kept. He has been honored with numerous awards including most recently 1st Place in a global art competition sponsored by the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights for his piece entitled “Sending Wings instead of Arms”. Best Photo Essay from the CA Newspaper Publishers Assoc. for a series on 9/11’s effects on SF; 1st Prize in the Luminance Exhibition (NYC) for a digital composition critiquing the “War on Terror”. Hakim was also nominated for a US Artist Fellowship. His documentary projects have been exhibited in San Francisco, Washington, D.C., London, Los Angeles, Kolkatta and Ho Chi Minh City.
