The Last Watch

Zifan Zhang | China

China's rural areas are grappling with rapid ageing, as young people migrate to urban centers. Villages like Gao Ban Ling Jiao in Zhejiang province are left with elderly residents, struggling to maintain their traditional lifestyle. The social fabric is weakening, and cultural heritage is at risk.

The government is attempting to revitalize these villages through tourism, hoping to attract visitors and create jobs. However, the effectiveness of these initiatives in improving the lives of the elderly, particularly those unable to participate, remains uncertain. As the ageing crisis deepens, finding sustainable solutions to support rural communities becomes increasingly urgent.
