In the midday heat, a Zaza man tends to his pasture, silhouetted against the vast, open field. Agriculture is more than survival here in Tunceli; it’s a deep-rooted way of life, a tie to heritage, and a connection to nature’s rhythms that has sustained generations.

Guardians of the Munzur

Olivia Bowdoin | Turkey

The Zaza Kurds’ way of life is on the brink of extinction. Their culture, spiritual traditions, and connection to the land face immediate threat from government plans to build hydroelectric dams along the Munzur River. This river, an ancient lifeline for the Zazas, is a spiritual symbol intricately tied to their identity and beliefs.

Nestled in the mountains of Eastern Turkey, Tunceli (historically Dersim) is home to the Zazas, a distinct group within the Kurdish people who practice Alevism, a belief system that reveres nature—rivers, trees, and wildlife—as sacred. For decades, the Zazas have been marginalized in a country that refuses to recognize their ethnic and religious identity. Almost a century ago, thousands were massacred in a brutal attempt to erase their identity. Today, the looming construction of dams threatens to wipe out what remains of their spiritual practices and agricultural livelihoods.

Through this project, I aim to document and preserve the beauty and resilience of Zaza culture while acknowledging the tragedies that contextualize their plight.  I hope to inspire broader reflections on humanity's relationship with nature in a rapidly-changing world.
