Pattankodoli

Kishore Yadav | India

Rural Maharashtra is known for its vibrant Jatra festivals, dedicated to regional deities, and the Vitthal Birdev Jatra of Pattankodoli stands out as one of the most celebrated. Part of Maharashtra’s Golden Tribhandara Festival, this event honors Birdev, a family deity of the Dhangar community, who is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva. The Dhangars, a nomadic shepherding community, are easily identified by their traditional attire, including the Kada (iron bangle), Ghongadi (woolen blanket), and Kathi (stick).

A key feature of the festival is the prophecy of Farande Baba, also known as Keloba Rajabhau Wagmore, who embarks on a barefoot pilgrimage from Anjungaon to Pattankodoli. After fasting for seven days, he visits the temple, where he leads a procession of thousands carrying colorful Chabina umbrellas. Baba performs the Hedam dance before announcing his prophecies, which are said to be 90% accurate, predicting weather, crops, and the economy. The festival, filled with music, dance, and vibrant celebrations, transforms the village into a lively display of tradition and faith.
