Chitwan National park, located in the south of Nepal, is one of the major tourist destination. For centuries, domestic elephants are synonymous with luck and prosperity. In the past, they were the emblem of rich landowners. They are now mainly used in tourism for jungle safaris and by Nepali government and National Trust for Nature Conservation for patrolling and transportation.
This part of the documentary is about the captive elephants belonging to private companies that are used only for tourism.
Mahout, who are in charge of them, are marginalized community. The custom of treating them as poorly as the elephants is woven into the fabric of society and their living conditions are a mirror image of those of the elephants. They are underpaid and devalued employees.
I plan to work on the second part of this documentary, about the captive elephants belonging to the government and their mahouts beginning of 2025.
I have been a french photographer, for more than twenty years dividing my life between France and Asia (Nepal and India).
I work on long term social and environmental projects.
