Courtside: Life and Community on the Courts of Claremont

This photographic exhibition explores the enduring role of basketball in the lives of Claremont residents. Through a series of images, it documents the vibrant culture that unfolds on the neighborhood's numerous courts – from organized games and casual pick-up sessions to the daily rhythms of youth basketball programs.

The exhibition examines the social and cultural significance of these spaces, highlighting the community bonds formed on the court, the mentorship opportunities that arise, and the resilience of youth in the face of adversity. It also delves into the challenges faced by community programs, such as the impact of external pressures and the ongoing struggle to create safe and inclusive spaces for all.

"Courtside" offers a glimpse into the heart of Claremont, capturing the spirit of the game and its enduring power to connect and inspire.

Clyde H. Thompson Jr. envisioned a sanctuary for the youth of Claremont. His summer basketball camp at the Butler Community Center aimed to provide a haven from the violence that plagued their neighborhood, a place where they could feel safe, have fun, and learn valuable life lessons.

While initial enthusiasm was high, the program faced numerous challenges. The constant presence of police officers during games underscored the realities of their environment, while logistical hurdles often forced cancellations. Yet, the spirit of the program endured. Young participants, driven by their love for the game, adapted, organizing impromptu practices and scrimmages. Older teens emerged as mentors, guiding younger players and fostering a sense of camaraderie.

The joy of receiving team jerseys, the nervous anticipation before the first game – these were familiar rites of passage, timeless rituals that continued to inspire a new generation of young athletes.
