The consequences of human impact on the environment are increasingly affecting more people. The global food system is highly extractive and is causing significant damage to air, soil, water, and human health. Moreover, agriculture is expected to fall 40% short of the world’s food supply needs by 2050, when the global population will approach 10 billion.
I N S C T S documents the solutions that insect farming offers locally to these pressing global environmental challenges.
Some insects can be fed organic waste, converting it into feed for animals—such as chickens or many freshwater fish—that naturally consume insects in their diet. Additionally, "frass" (insect residuals) serves as a natural and economical alternative to chemical fertilizers.
Insects have also been part of human diets for centuries in many regions of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. However, edible insect aversion is a product of colonial history, which stigmatized the consumption of this traditional and nutritious resource.
This is the story of an ongoing (re)connection to nature based systems, the story of a global revolutionary opportunity
For many critical issues, such as the ever growing population, the decline in biodiversity, overfishing, the protein crunch, and food waste, insect farming offers a natural solution, but it also requires cultural adaptation.
The main purpose of I N S C T S is to encourage reflection, and inspire positive change. This is why I also run a podcast engaging with experts and I produce multimedia installations—to reach as many people as possible.
During the shoots I also recorded audio interviews. I speak with environmentalists, entomologists, entrepreneurs, anthropologists, and activists. Among them are globally renowned experts, all the I N S C T S content references their research.
Suitable for multimedia installations some of these conversations are published as a podcast with the title “Get The Bug” available on all major platforms.
