Stephen Shames: a lifetime in photography

Stephen Shames | whole world

Stephen Shames: A lifetime in Photography contains 40 photographs from my upcoming retrospective book published by Kehrer Verlag.

This book contains photographs from my five decade journey across five continents. I care about this book since it is the culmination of my journey, something for future generations.

I have been a photographer for more than five decades. I traversed five continents, witnessing tragedy and triumph. Much of my photography is about children and families in distress with a focus on identity and family: what tears us apart and binds us together—violence and abuse, but also sensuality, love, hope, and transcendence.

This retrospective book is the culmination of my journey. The images come from my heart and soul.

My journey as a photographer started during the 1960s when I was a student at the University of California at Berkeley. I became an artist of the struggle. I got to know the leaders of theanti-Vietnam War and the Black Power movements, including Bobby Seale, cofounder of theBlack Panthers, who became a mentor. Seale and the Panthers taught me how to see a community that was not my own from the inside.

During my career, I was able to get a glimpse into many innovative minds. I was honored to spend a week withStephen Hawkingwho suffered from a progressive, ultimately fatal disease called ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. What makes this man incredible is, despite being completely paralyzed, he led an amazingly full life. I was also privileged to meet Martin Luther King Jr. King’s vision, his dream of freedom, inspired me to start the project that becameOutside the Dream: Child Poverty in America(Aperture, 1991), which documented the twelve million children living in poverty in the USA. It became my first published book.

AfterOutside the Dream, I wandered the nether world of poverty for three decades. I looked through the camera atyouthin urban ghettos, came across homeless kids sleeping in parks and beaches, documentedstreet kids, child laborers, and soldiers who lived by their wits on the streets of Asia, Eastern Europe, and South America.

Pictured here are many of society’s outcasts but these are not only images of victims. They are also about inner strength and hope. Ten years into my journey through this desert of neglect, I met organizations and communities creating better lives for children and families, so I started documenting “solutions” which were published in the bookPursuing the Dreamand also exhibited in state capitols in order the influence elected officials to better serve children and families.
