Asylum seekers wait on the waterfront outside the Randall's Island shelter in New York City on December 16, 2023. With more than 200,000 asylum seekers arriving in the city since 2022, the shelter system has been far over capacity. The mayor spoke of a crisis that will "destroy" his city, and the population's welcoming attitude was beginning to shift.

In an election year when immigration is one of the top concerns of the U.S. population, "Kings Without Land" takes viewers on a deep dive into New York City's historic migration crisis.

While NYC's mayor speaks of a crisis that will "destroy" his city, and the population's welcoming attitude is beginning to shift, the web documentary accompanies people like Siley, Marko, and Amir – asylum seekers that Sebastian Sele has met outside one of NYC's largest emergency shelters in the fall of 2023.

The project was developed and exhibited at the International Center of Photography, featured in The New York Times and NZZ, shortlisted at the Italian Festival of Ethical Photography, and one of the five finalists for "Best Digital News Story" at the French Festival Visa Pour l'Image, alongside stories from the NYT, Le Monde and other major publishers.
