Talim Island (Buhangin) - Fish port laborers wait for approaching fishing boats to dock so that they can unload fish. Laguna de Bay (a freshwater lake) faces challenges related to the climate crisis. "Abrupt weather changes caused by the climate crisis has increased typhoon activity and created unpredictable rainfall patterns in the region. This along with warmer water temperatures in lakes slows down processes that add oxygen to water - areas with less oxygen are unable to support life; all of which have combined to offset the normal reproductive cycle for fish - negatively altering the reproductive season. Also, higher temperatures may reduce the abundance of wild fish stocks in lakes reducing water quality and causing longer dry seasons and fish mortality,” stated an Aquaculturist with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources - National Inland Fisheries Technology Center in the Philippines. Nearly a quarter of the world's freshwater fish are at risk of extinction due to global heating, overfishing and pollution, according to research by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Moments In Time - Philippines

Ric Francis | Philippines

I documented Filipinos whose livelihoods are impacted by the climate crisis, e.g., fishermen, rice farmers and junk shop operators who recycle plastic, metal and paper. Also, I observed typical moments in time, that represented nothing particularly special, and used them to call attention to slices of life that were, well, forgettable. "Moments in Time" isn't so much about a project - it's a documentation of simple/ordinary moments in the Philippines.
