Andheri (W Bengal, India) is a small roadside hamlet on the banks of the Teesta river, close to Rangpo town. On the 04Oct2023, the GLOF hit this village at around 4.00am and dumped almost 10-15 feet of sand and debris on this village.
In this image, a student lazily browses thru his cell phone while sitting on a massive tree trunk which the GLOF brought down to his home. His home was badly damaged by the floods and their TV/ refrigerator/ other domestic tools lay around covered in sand and soil - the whole area was littered with tree trunks and sand.

The Teesta Valley GLOF disaster - the unheard voices

On 03/04Oct2023, a massive Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) occurred in the Himalayas. The South Lhonak lake (North Sikkim, India) located at an altitude of 17,500 feet, burst due to an avalanche and suddenly released 50 million cubic meters of icy water and debris into the Teesta River.
The deluge tore down the steep slopes, uprooting millions of trees and scooping out massive amounts of soil, boulders, debris. It destroyed the 1200MW Sikkim Urja dam at Chungthang (North Sikkim) and also many major bridges, while causing extensive landslides and severely damaging hydroelectric power projects along the Teesta valley. The floods also ravaged urban centers such as Singtam, Rangpo and Teesta bazar further downstream, claiming nearly 200 lives and causing huge economic losses.
As the river descended to lower altitudes, it slowed down, depositing massive amounts of sediment and debris, raising the riverbed by 4-5 meters and threatening previously safe populated areas.
This photo essay focuses on the human impact of the disaster rather than that on roads and infrastructure, highlighting the struggles of those affected by this disaster and the ongoing challenges they face each monsoon season.

As a photographer who has been photographing disasters for the past 17years for our blog https://savethehills.blogspot.com, I realize the importance of commencing work as soon as possible after a disaster – delay will lead to changes on the ground and possible distortion of facts.
So for the Teesta Valley GLOF disaster of Oct2023, we (Praveen Chhetri and I) started recording the disaster as it unfolded, on the day the GLOF occurred (04Oct2023) and my young colleague’s drone image of the floods hitting the Teesta bazar (W Bengal, India) at around 11.00 am on 04Oct2023 is certainly one of the most iconic photo of any GLOF so far.

Thereafter, we have recorded the event and its impact all along the Teesta valley right thru and continue doing this work even today.
