Now, they need to catch trains to bigger cities or other European countries further West.

Those who wait for trains are mainly women and children as men had to stay in Ukraine to fight.

As there are tens of thousands trying to catch these trains every day, many have to wait for hours before they manage to get on one.

Trains going West are packed to the point where it is practically impossible to move.

Then, as many families left Ukraine without a plan for what to do next, train stations are becoming their temporary homes.

At Warsaw central train station, thousands of families sleep on the ground.

Some make improvised beds using plastic chairs.

At night, temperatures outside fall below zero degrees so, even though far from comfortable, sleeping at the train station offers protection from the cold.

Some Ukrainians refused to leave their pets behind so dogs and cats can be spotted amid refugees.

The scale of suffering that this war has caused is overwhelming and no one could deny the omnipresent sadness at Warsaw central train station. And yet, Ukrainian children and their moms are smiling through it all because, at least for now, they are safe from Putin's bombs.
