The boathouse is one of the many small buildings spread lightly across the island from Bowdoin College’s 100 years of ownership. Buildings are maintained by the caretaker with a light environmental footprint on the island ecosystem and overall sustainable practices. Most serve as residences for students, visiting guests, graduate students and professors.

For the Birds, the Kent Island Science Station in the time of Climate Change

Julianne Gauron | New Brunswick, Canada

Organization: Snow on the Road

Kent Island Science Station is a remote research outpost for young biology students undertaking their first field work. It has been active for a century, disrupted only by WWII and Covid.

Students engage in their own research, and decades long projects, on subjects like leach's storm petrel (vulnerable,) savannah sparrow studies (some risk), tree swallows, herring gulls, native pollinators (threatened,) removal of invasive species, and intertidal zones. I witnessed a great dissonance between the students’ enthusiasm and the reality they were documenting: a world in peril.

Living off the grid for the summer, the students experienced a world not dictated by the intensity of technology. Their lives were simple, their footprint light, and days were entirely dictated by the weather, wildlife, and the tides.

Watching the students’ daily routines; conducting research, making observations, sharing their hopes and doubts, I couldn’t help thinking of how their summer mirrored the story of our world. Kent Island, serves as a reminder of what we stand to lose and what remains, offering a chance to pause, to reconsider, and to renew our commitment to this fragile, beautiful planet.

My photography is influenced by my love for the natural world, a deep sense of curiosity, and my compassion for all living beings. Stories of humans caring for, cultivating, and living in harmony with the natural world are major themes in my work. Moving at the pace of and connecting with nature is an act of connection missing in most people’s lives. Through my images I strive to show that humans are a part of a greater natural whole.

My industrial design background allows me to think on micro and macro levels simultaneously, about the moment I am in, the narrative and the impact. This intention and complexity excite me as a creative.

I partner with nonprofits by telling empathetic, respectful stories in support of their organizational action to improve human rights, environmental protections, reduce inequity, and advance sustainable agricultural solutions. I tell stories because I believe we can improve our world through connections. My camera, my own connections, and the resulting stories are my tools for hope and change in the world.
