The invisible evil / Mercury poisoning in Indonesia

Minamata syndrome occurs through chronic mercury poisoning, used to amalgamate gold dust in hundreds of illegal mines in the forests of Indonesia. The process releases toxic substances: miners who have been in contact with mercury for years suffer from neurodegenerative diseases. But the waste from the extraction are also contaminating the surrounding environment and the water tables: people living in villages located downstream of the mines have, without their knowledge, used to drink, cook and irrigate the fields, water containing mercury. The invisible disease, in Indonesian Kejahatan yang tidak terlihat, is transmitted by direct contact or from the mother to the fetus with morphological and anatomical abnormalities. It also manifests with neurological problems, difficulty in movement, muscle weakness, visual, auditory and cognitive deficits. It can suffer paralysis, coma, even death. Although there is no medical confirmation that hydrocephalus is linked to mercury contamination, it has been found that cases are six times higher than average in mining areas. UNIDO, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, has estimated that at least one third of all mercury released by humans into the environment comes from artisanal mines.

Social justice is the essential root for a better future. Without it, other forms of justice such as economic and environmental cannot be fully achieved.
