Lebanon 2024: A Wartime Olive Harvest

Elizabeth Fitt | Bekaa, Lebanon

Lebanon's 2024 olive harvest took place in October and November as Israel carried out airstrikes across the country. Pickers gathered in olive groves after the first rains fell, to harvest as fast as possible, especially in areas subject to frequent air raids. The pickers pictured worked a 63 tree grove in East Bekaa, near the Syrian border, in two days. Owner Jad accompanied the harvested olives south to an olive press that reverberated to the sounds of bombing as the olives were ground and pressed to yield over 300 litres of olive oil.
