Moldova is the poorest country in Europe since the day of declaration of its independence in 1991 when the population was 4.36 million. At the present, country’s population (including Transnistria) is estimated to 3.6 million habitants. Between 25% and 40% of Moldova’s active population has left the country. It Is the youth who emigrateS most frequently. In the past ten years the number of Moldovans who go abroad to seek a job has risen as well. Between 2006 and 2010 about 20,000 Moldovan children were born abroad. There are two worrying demographic trends in Moldova – depopulation and aging population. Phenomenon of depopulation of Moldova is mostly generated by weak economy, corruption, incompetent and very corrupted political class, lack of national identity, all these factors make active population to go abroad in pursuit of better opportunities.
MOLDOVA EXODUS is photographed in Republic of Moldova and shows the declining demographic situation in rural part of the country.
