A decapitated statue of Russian writer Maxim Gorky stands in the city centre of Chasiv Yar on October 8, 2023, Donetsk region, Ukraine. The statue has allegedly been destroyed by Russian shelling. Chasiv Yar overlooks the highly contested city of Bakhmut, and it has been a vital military logistical hub since the start of the full-scale invasion. It is strategically positioned on the hills and is now a target for Russian forces; street battles are already occurring. The town represent the last elevated positions before Kramatorsk, Kostiantynivka and Sloviansk, important cities for Ukraine where a series of roads and railways connect the Donetsk region with the rest of the country.

In The Shadow of a Deadly Sky

The war in Eastern Ukraine, which began in 2014, intensified dramatically after Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022 under President Vladimir Putin. This conflict, driven by years of diplomatic tensions, led to widespread displacement, with millions of Ukrainians fleeing their homes. By 2023 and 2024, Russian forces increasingly targeted civilian infrastructure, leaving millions without essential services like electricity, water, and heating. Key civilian sites, including restaurants and hotels, were struck by ballistic missiles, resulting in heavy casualties. Notably, in October 2023, an attack on a cafe during a reburial vigil in Kharkiv killed 59 people.

In 2024, Russian forces made gradual gains in Donetsk, while Ukraine launched an offensive in Russia's Kursk region, marking the first breach of Russian borders since WWII. Despite this, Ukraine's military faced significant resource shortages, and aggressive recruitment policies led many to evade conscription, undermining the army's effectiveness.

The relentless bombardments continue to leave behind a trail of destruction, crippling Ukraine's infrastructure, economy, and way of life, leaving every Ukrainian affected by the ongoing conflict.
