#BlackLivesMatter - Even In Canada

B. D. Colen | Ontario, Canada

Far from the streets of Minneapolis, or Washington, or New York, more than 5,000 residents of London, Ontario, turned out on June 7 to support the #BlackLivesMatters demonstrations taking place all over the US.

As an American living in Canada for the past four years it has become ever clearer to me that for all its positive atributes, and there are many, Canada is not the paradise it wants the world to think it is. In fact, despite what many of my Canadian friends believe, Canadians - and Canada - are far more like Americans and America than is generally believed -especially when it comes to the place of minorities in society, and law enforcements mistreatment of those minorities. That said, it was heartening to see more than 5,000 people marching in London, Ontario, for racial justice, in support of the millions of Amertcans who have poured into the streets to protest the murder of George Floyd, and police mistreatment of Americans of color.
