"One Thousand Four Hundred Sixty"
The images in the enclosed series of diptychs entitled "My Name Is...", is an ongoing body of work that attempts to bestow dignity on the everyday lives of women recovering from various addictions. In recovery, there is an emphasis placed on the instance a person decides to stop their addictive behavior. Although each addict’s experience is unique, this event is referred as an epiphany. I try to recreate these revelations by photographing my subjects in environments that symbolize their personal definition of tranquility and delicately arrange light to suggest the presence of "grace." The images juxtapose these portraits represent each woman's "sobriety symbol." For them, these ordinary items embody serenity and serve as spiritual totems against the inevitable probability of relapse. Some women are members of twelve-step-programs which protect their anonymity, a practice I adhered to and made evident. The titles represent the number of days they are addiction free.
Their perseverance despite the odds is commendable. My hope is this series will counterbalance the often-stereotyped media representations of addicts that wrongly glamorize or exploit their struggles.
