Fighting for Peace

melanie brown | Kabul, Afghanistan

Broken mirrors line the walls of this dark gym underneath the stalls of the Ghazi stadium.

These photographs form part of an 11 minute photofilm about young women boxers in Afghanistan.

In a gym in Kabul, underneath the Ghazi stadium where women were once executed by the Taliban, 30 young women are now training as boxers. Against the backdrop of a traditional patriarchal society where women have struggled to gain their rights, these young boxers have to negotiate family and societal expectations to pursue their boxing.

One of the boxers, Sadaf Rahimi, has represented Afghanistan internationally and narrowly missed out on a place at the London 2012 Olympics. Her boxing peers are keen to follow in her footsteps and become elite boxers.Through boxing, Sadaf hopes to improve equality between men and women and she wants her achievements to inspire others.
