UPWC is one of six Palestinian civil society groups that was designated a “terrorist organization” without evidence by the Israeli Defense Ministry. Both Tahreer and Dalia have been engaged with UPWC since childhood, attending schools set up by the group – and Dalia is the daughter of Maha Nassar, a founding member of UPWC and its president until her death, and known for her influence as an activist in the First Intifada.

Do’a Zayed, the head project manager and seed bank coordinator at UAWC (Union of Agricultural Workers’ Committees), stands with buckets of vegetable seeds at the organization’s indigenous seed bank in Hebron. UAWC was the first of the six Palestinian civil society groups recently designated as “terror groups” by the Israeli Defense Ministry to lose international funding, despite an independent probe by the Dutch government that found no evidence of corruption or foul play.

Issa Amro, the founder of local Hebron human rights group Youth Against Settlements, sits outside at his home in Hebron. The house is often used as a community center for the group, and someone must always be home, to deter the repeat attacks by settlers living just across the fence, who have painted over the house’s security cameras and tried to poison their rainwater tanks. Issa was awaiting the results of an appeal to the IDF’s military court on charges from over ten years ago, which include protesting without a permit.

Akram Alwara in his home jewelry workshop in the Aida refugee camp in Bethlehem – he shows me the hood he wears when he cleans tear gas canisters to ready them for flattening and jewelry making. He had the idea to transform the canisters during an IDF invasion into the camp in 2014 when he was forced to temporarily close his jewelry shop, spotted a canister on the ground, and decided to make something beautiful out of the weapon.
