Sarajevo Daily Lives

Sacha Jennis | Bosnia and Herzegovina

Mak Hubjer is running Gallerija
Brodac, a small art gallery near Basarcija. It used to be a political prison hence the bars in its logo. Mak is a very committed gallery owner who frequently changes exposition. Every month you can pass by and see the work of local and international artists. And have a coffee and a nice talk.

Back in 2014, I undertook a motorcycle road trip through the Balkans. I spent little yet enough time in Bosnia Herzegovina and its capital Sarajevo, to find the inspiration to come back as a photographer. Last fall, October 2019, I traveled to Sarajevo for the 5th time to finish my photo series Sarajevo Daily Lives.

The photo series covers Sarajevo’s wonderful creative & young people. Over the years, I met a lot of wonderful people showing me the vibrant character of Bosnia’s capital. Sarajevo always has been appealing for journalists & photographers, yet I had the feeling most articles cover history and the 90s civil war. Also, economically, Bosnia Herzegovina is still a mess. Mass unemployment leads to mass emigration of young, strong profiles. Many young and undertaking people however, chose to stay and make the best of life in Bosnia. Their efforts lead to the establishment of a peer-to-peer network for local businesses, a local arts and culture scène, and so on. Sarajevo Daily Lives is about these young entrepreneurs' stories.

For Sarajevo Daily Lives I met with many wonderful, spontaneous people living in the city of Sarajevo or its surroundings. Economically Bosnia Herzegovina is a mess. Mass unemployment leads to mass emigration of young, strong profiles. There is hope, however. The people in this series chose to stay and make the best of life in BiH and Sarajevo.
Thanks to their personal efforts, the city is internationally acclaimed as a cultural hotspot for events life the international film festival. On a smaller scale local artist galleries. . Their efforts lead to the establishment of a peer-to-peer network and create a platform for start-ups on the European map
