Eddie, Son's Room
We are a very tight family and enjoy doing things together. It has been an adjustment. I like not having to schedule “what’s for dinner”; I usually cook a lot of the meals and having to deal with the divergent appetites and I had to adjust, but the day to day stuff is spontaneous and easier.

The term "empty nest" originated in the late 19th century but gained prominence in psychology and sociology literature by the 1940s. Initially, it described a cluster of negative emotions—such as depression, grief, and guilt—experienced by mothers when their last child left home.
Today, the concept has broadened to encompass a wider spectrum of parental reactions, including both positive and negative emotions. Additionally, the notion of the “nest” itself has evolved, sometimes incorporating returning adult children or transforming into multigenerational households.
In this project, I interview and photograph empty and partially empty nesters in their homes, capturing their diverse perspectives on this transitional stage of life.
