Feeding Ukrainian Refugees in Moldova

Restaurants, local and international volunteers and aid organizations unite to feed a growing refugee population in Chisinau, Moldova

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began on February, 24, 2022, more than 360,000 Ukrainians, mostly women and children, have fled the besieged country seeking safety in neighboring Moldova. While many have stayed only a day or two before moving on to other European countries, tens of thousands remain in Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, a city of fewer than 500,00 and less than 90 miles from the border with Ukraine.

While the largest number of refugees have fled to Poland, the highest per capita have arrived at the border of Moldova. The small, poor, but generous country of just 2.6 million people, has united and risen to the challenge of feeding an ongoing flood of people fleeing Russian violence.

The number of people displaced since Russia began its siege has surpassed 3.7 million and is expected to grow."
