Offshore wind development will mark the nation’s next significant energy shift. With Massachusetts possessing the greatest potential for offshore wind power among all states. There are several projects at various stages of planning on the eastern seaboard, including the nation’s first industrial-scale development, Vineyard Wind One, out of New Bedford. The town that once illuminated the world with whale oil will now light up the country through clean energy. With 62 turbines Vinyard Wind One will generate enough energy to power 400,000 homes. Due to climate change, the Gulf of Maine waters are warming faster than 99% of other bodies of water globally. Local marine species are migrating in unpredictable patterns—what scientists refer to as "regime shifts." The transition to a carbon-zero energy economy is underway, and understanding the implications is crucial for determining how we progress in developing this new industry. Studies on environmental impacts are being gathered to establish a baseline for further comparisons. Research is being undertaken on a variety of species such as plankton, birds, migratory fish, endangered species, as well as industry-critical species.
