In Trump We Trust

Kevin McKeon | New York and Washington D.C., United States

The rise of Donald Trump to President of the United States may seem inexplicable and even frightening to many of us, but to his most loyal followers, the commitment is all-encompassing and absolute - even god-like. I attended two Trump rallies, one in New York and one in Washington D.C., and while I did not make it inside either venue, I was able to spend a good deal of time with those waiting in line outside; a line that, in one case, extended well over a mile. In this exhibit, I share some of what I saw.

These images were captured in the days leading up to the election and subsequent inauguration of Donald Trump, before anyone knew what was coming in the months ahead. My intent, as I surveyed the crowds anxiously waiting to see their hero, was to capture the people I saw (and in some cases met) without judgement or predetermined purpose – to document without prejudice. I hope that I accomplished that.

When shooting people, I typically take a fly-on-the-wall approach, preferring to capture subjects unaware of the camera or, at the very least, not directly engaging with it. But in this case, it was precisely that eye-to-eye contact which was often so revealing.
