War in Afghanistan & Iraq: A Look Back

John Simpson | Iraq and Afghanistan

War is a complicated affair premised on a failure to understand, appreciate and respect another culture's values and beliefs.  True to its name, war is filled with violence and death.

The images presented here were taken between 2005 and 2012 while I was embedded with American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.  While some of the images capture the hardness of war, others show the quiet humanity between soliders and those individuals who had nothing to do with the war.

I am not sure there is much of a statement to make about war - other than it achieves nothing.  As I pointed out in my exhibit abstract, war is a failure on a lot of levels to understand other culture's values and beliefs that ironically can lead some to a greater understanding of the culture we were at war with in Iraq and Afghanistan.
