Cities experience birth, death, boredom, and excitement like the citizens that live in them. The city of Hackensack has seen its population grow for every census year since at least 1810, but that growth has remained nominal since the turn of the century. That is changing: Businesses open and close, residential construction alters the landscape, and strangers are welcomed as neighbors, while many say the evolving dynamics here are driving out low- and middle-income residents. These are images depicting that tedious, changing home to 50,000 people — its growth, contraction, revolution — during 9 months (May 2020-January 2021) of the COVID-19 pandemic. WORK IN PROGRESS
