Life in Occupation: The Cissie Gool House and Cape Town’s Housing Crisis

Jodi Windvogel | Western Cape, South Africa

This project documents the lives of residents at Cissie Gool House, a former Woodstock Hospital transformed into a sanctuary for over 2,000 people by Reclaim the City (RTC). Occupied in 2017 as a protest against gentrification and Cape Town’s severe housing crisis, the space has become a vibrant community with shops, libraries, and communal areas, offering refuge to those facing displacement or homelessness.

Cape Town’s housing crisis is one of South Africa’s most acute, with over 365,000 households lacking adequate shelter. The Cissie Gool House represents an innovative, community-driven response, repurposing neglected urban spaces to challenge gentrification and the city’s exclusionary spatial planning.

By highlighting this story, the project sheds light on the resilience and ingenuity of a community fighting for housing justice, offering a model of hope and resistance against systemic inequality, and advocating for a more inclusive and equitable Cape Town.

As a South African documentary photographer and filmmaker, I am dedicated to dismantling stereotypes and illuminating critical social issues such as land, memory, gender, and displacement.

Through my lens, I weave the intricate narratives of human experiences, fostering authentic and intimate connections between my subjects and the audience. This work is deeply personal, reflecting my unwavering commitment to reshaping narratives and amplifying the resilience of marginalized communities.

My ultimate aim is to cultivate empathy, spark meaningful dialogue, and inspire transformative societal change. As a visual storyteller, I strive to offer fresh perspectives that challenge assumptions and encourage a more compassionate and inclusive worldview.
