Exhibit Title: Sacred Waters: The Kumbh Mela Pilgrimage
Location: India
According to Hindu mythology, the gods and demons once fought a great battle over akumbh(pitcher) containing the nectar of immortality. The battle lasted 12 days and 12 nights in the heavens, during which four drops of the nectar fell to earth at four locations: Prayag (Allahabad), Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nasik. These sacred sites are now pilgrimage destinations, hosting theKumbh Mela, or the “Festival of the Pitcher,” every three years in rotation.
TheKumbh Melais the largest religious congregation on earth and the largest human gathering globally. On January 24, 2001, the day of theroyal bath, over 30 million people gathered in Prayag to bathe in the holy waters.
More than a religious observance, the Kumbh Mela embodies India’s rich cultural diversity, deep spiritual heritage, and the unifying power of faith, drawing millions together in devotion.
The next Kumbh Mela pilgrimage will begin in January 2025.

I am a photojournalist based in Chicago, specializing in documentary photography with a focus on religion. My work often explores faith and its profound impact on the human body, mind, and society.
My journey with the Kumbh Mela began in 1998 when I was assigned to cover the processions and the royal bath of the Haridwar Kumbh Mela for a magazine. While the processions are among the festival’s most iconic moments, the Kumbh Mela offers a window into every facet of Hindu religious life. What started as a week-long assignment turned into a month-long stay, as I found myself captivated by India’s most fascinating and enigmatic traditions—a unique blend of spirituality, sophistication, and cultural vibrancy.
Three years later, I returned to document the first Mela of the 21st century in Allahabad. Over the next 12 years, I continued this journey, photographing the Kumbh Mela at its rotating locations, completing the full cycle of this extraordinary pilgrimage.
