Shroud of History

Frank Ward | Poland and Ukraine

Life in Poland and Ukraine is soaked with memories.  World War II, and its crimes against humanity, is bracketed by the recently ended Soviet domination, and more crimes against humanity. Both countries are facing their new freedoms with the specter of history shaping their contemporary outlook.

In 2001, I traveled to Ukraine, and in 2005, to Ukraine and Poland. In many ways, visiting Eastern Europe is like journeying decades into the past. In Ukraine, there is a debate as to whether people are better off without the Soviets. Poland has benefited from the cooperation of the European Union. Both countries still live on the edge of two worlds.
