Mermaid Parade 2019, Coney Island, Brooklyn New York City

Burroughs Lamar | New York City, United States

Untitled

This was my third time going to the Mermaid Parade in the Coney Island, neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City on June 22, 2019.It is arguably one of the four biggest parades in the City. In 2018, it was estimated, 830,000 people attended, a record. It permits anyone to participate in whatever costume one can create, with a mermaid or water theme. However, political and environmental interests among other causes are allowed to participate. The images are from the parade route and on the boardwalk and beach. Each person, presented their unique costume, that reveals the effort and imagination that appeared to match their personality and fanfare, that begged to be captured.

The MERMAID PARADE specifically was founded in 1983 with 3 goals: it brings mythology to life for local residents who live on streets named Mermaid and Neptune ; it creates self-esteem in a district that is often disregarded as “entertainment”; and it lets artistic New Yorkers find self-expression in public.
