Scenes From A Movement

Bernadette Fox | Minnesota, United States

A powerful showing of supporters dwarfed the anti-abortion attendees at the “I Stand With Planned Parenthood” demonstration in St. Paul, MN, as police estimated 6,000 participants at the nonprofit's headquarters. The majority of protestors were in solidarity of Planned Parenthood's community services, and only 250 to 400 people engaged in the opposing “Defund PP Rally.”

Although federal funds don’t directly pay for abortions, Planned Parenthood is reimbursed for other critical services such as birth control, STI treatments and cancer screenings. Many, including President Trump, oppose federal funding for Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood operates 18 clinics in Minnesota, 21 in Wisconsin, 12 in Iowa and one in South Dakota—only one of which provides abortions. Of the 9,861 abortions recorded by the Minnesota Health Department in 2015, more than half—5,048—were performed there.

As a documentarian, I focus my efforts on the hero’s journey of the everyday individual within their community. I’m intrigued by real people and what happens at the intersection of identity, challenge and change, and the defining moments of the human experience. Documenting those dynamics requires me to approach subjects from a place of great intimacy, while not neglecting to leave room for the spontaneous.
