A family photo of Ashkan and his parents. Born into a conservative and deeply religious household in Iran, Ashkan faced rejection when he came out as gay. That night, his parents declared him 'sick,' disowned him, and forced him to leave their home. In the months that followed, their condemnation grew so severe they expressed a desire for his death

Queer, Life, Freedom

Ashkan Shabani | Iran - Turkey - Germany

Although queer individuals have existed throughout Iran’s history, the Islamic Republic has systematically denied their existence for over four decades. LGBTQ+ individuals in Iran live under the shadow of execution, judicial persecution, and family rejection, because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Queer, Life, Freedom chronicles the experiences of Ashkan Shabani, an Iranian queer photographer who fled unimaginable adversity. After being disowned by his family, sentenced to death for his sexuality, and facing constant threats of violence in Iran, Ashkan sought safety in Turkey, only to encounter further systemic oppression and discrimination. Now in a German refugee camp, he continues to navigate the challenges of asylum while striving to tell the stories of countless others like him.

This story captures moments of resilience, isolation, and defiance. Through intimate visuals, Ashkan illuminates his personal journey the universal struggle for dignity, and the enduring hope for a world where justice triumphs over oppression.

As a queer visual storyteller from Iran, my work explores the intersection of identity, survival, and freedom. “Queer, Life, Freedom” is both a deeply personal journey and a universal narrative that gives voice to those silenced by systemic oppression. My story, and the stories of countless others, reflect the unrelenting search for safety and authenticity amid threats of violence, rejection, and forced displacement.

Photography has been my means of survival—a way to process trauma, challenge injustice, and reclaim visibility for the LGBTQ+ community in the MENA region and beyond. The images I create aim to amplify stories of courage and resilience, highlighting both the struggles and the hope that persists in the face of adversity. Each frame invites viewers to bear witness to our humanity, to see us not as statistics or abstract struggles, but as people striving for the most fundamental right to live freely and openly.

Through this project, I seek to foster empathy and understanding, while creating a bridge between marginalized voices and a global audience. My lens is my tool for advocacy, and my work is a testament to the enduring spirit of those who dare to exist.
