This is one of the first moments of respite that the family has had, after a long day of running around. From blood works to different scans, the family has not stopped since 8 a.m. that freezing cold early-winter morning. In the ultrasound exam room, the last of a battery of tests conducted that day.

J.J. is a 13-year-old boy with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The disease, more common in boys, causes progressive weakness and loss of muscular mass. This process speeds up once the person is wheelchair-bound. J.J.is also on the autism spectrum. Every member of his family is also on the autism spectrum.

The family has had several strokes of luck in the last six months. They have been able to buy a specialized van that allows them to travel with J.J’s wheelchair. They’ve also been told that they will be able to receive J.J.’s osteoporosis medication free of charge and in Kingston, rather than Ottawa. They’ve been able to go to the Disney cruise thanks to the Make-A-Wish foundation. Finally, they have been told that Habitat for Humanity have found the land for their new home, some three years after they had initially told the family.
