Class Description

Designed for documentary photographers and photojournalists who want to dive into essential components of video editing and post-production to become better and more powerful storytellers. Students will learn from Sarah Fretwell, who began incorporating video into her photography work in  2011. Self-taught in video shooting and post-production, she now runs a full-service production company directing and producing video, audio, photography, and writing for international NGOs and news organizations.

The course is structured based on what Sarah wishes someone would have taught her when she took the leap into video!

Students will learn how to take their raw footage, and by understanding the concepts and technical aspects of editing, produce an engaging story.  The focus will include evaluating what makes an successful edit, pre-production worksheets to clarify the client’s main goals, organizing the project, basic timeline tools, tips for working with audio/sound score, and creative problem-solving.

Using Premiere Pro (students are welcome to also use Final Cut Pro X), the course will cover the basics of organizing and structuring an edit, building an editing schedule, and using the video editor’s core tools.

The course will combine lecture, demonstration, discussion, and critique. Students will be expected to practice techniques and share their work for review during the course.

Students will be required to provide their computer and editing software.
