Combining photography & drawing to document effects of gold mining

For the last ten years, I have been visiting El Chocó, in the Colombian Pacific coast, documenting the everyday resistance of the people there to the violence of the armed civil conflict, as well as threats to their rain forest environment and their traditional communities and ways of life.

Recently, the theme of gold mining, and especially the harmful effects of the mechanized mining that is replacing traditional artisanal mining, has become a central focus of my work.

Now, working with the artist Mary Kelsey, I am hoping to return to the area this summer to develop a multi-media project documenting these effects on the lives of the miners and their communities. We would be grateful for your support, and for your spreading the word about this project.
