Disappearing Wetlands of the Gulf Coast

Susan Guice | Mississippi, United States

Every 15 minutes an area of land the size of a football field is disappearing due to saltwater incursion.    As I fly over these largely unoccupied areas, I document their beauty, before they disappear forever.   This is the wetlands of South Louisiana and South Mississippi, responsible for almost one third of the seafood in the United States, and a major nesting area for waterfowl.

When I fly over the marsh, I'm captivated by the sinuous curves of the natural waterways, the coarse texture of the marsh grass, and the rich colors of the reflected sky on still waters and shallow, silty bottoms...But, it's hard to ignore the ugly slashes of straight lines created by man-made canals.  They point to the end of days for a way of life in this unique part of the world.

This work is part of a solo show at the Ohr-OKeefe Museum of Art (Biloxi, MS) titled, "The Mysterious Play of Water", running Sept 12 - Dec 6, 2015.
