This project grew out of my observations of Łódź over the last ten years. It is an attempt to capture the zeitgeist of Łódź while it inexorably mutates and transforms into a Westernised city.
Harsh and uncompromising, while at the same time a fascinating space where the burden of history still sustains the foul cityscape, creating a magnetic and intriguing urban-social structure. A significant element of this structure is the people living in the shadows of the city’s decayed industry among the remains of abandoned factories and decrepit buildings. Unique and charismatic, this cityscape raises questions about Łódź’s immediate future.
The space between reality and imagination, the relation between faces and the city’s textures, the capture and personal interpretation of the impact of history on the present condition of the urban-social fabric of Łódź are the subjects of my photographs.
