Residents relax on the lawn in the early morning to take in the fresh air
Situated on the western edge of the Blue Mountains 156 km north-west of Sydney, the town of Wallerawang is connected to one of New South Wales most important power stations, which dominates the landscape. Wallerawang is home 38 residents with intellectual disabilities, live in small group homes who come and go freely within the town of 1900 people. Their disabilities range form Alzheimer’s to Autism, learning difficulties and psychiatric problems ranging in ages from 20 to 100. The central boarding house provides the residents with activities and health assistance. The manager and staff allow the adults the same services and lifestyle as able bodied people integrating them into the community rather than isolating them.
