Men play cards in Rocinha, the biggest favela in Brazil, with over 100,000 residents, in Rio de Janeiro, Br., on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013. About 3,000 police officers and soldiers moved into one of the largest slums in Latin America early November 2011 in an effort by the Brazilian government to assert control over lawless areas of the city ahead of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics.

This essay depicts an intersection of stories exploring the rhythm of chaos and change in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro as its residents anticipate the approaching 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics. Life in the favelas is chaotic, intense, rhythmic, but also home to the new middle class, baile funk, new businesses, poverty, and thriving communities. Favelas hold a labyrinth of stories and memories throughout the alleyways that intrinsically wind like veins pumping life into a culture of its own.
Lianne Milton is an American editorial and documentary photographer based in Brazil. She began my freelance career in 2009, after working for three years as a newspaper photographer. Her work focuses on the effects of politics on people and their environments. In early January 2013 I packed up my life in San Francisco and moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with cameras and surfboards in tow, to begin a collection of stories about changes and issues of Cidade Maravilhosa (Rio de Janeiro) in light of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.
