The largest religious gathering in the world! According to astrologers, the 'Kumbh Fair' takes place when the planet Jupiter enters Aquarius and the Sun enters Aries.
Kumbha Mela iis a sacred Hindu pilgrimage that takes place every 12 years at three auspicious locations along the Ganges River. It is attended by millions of people from all over the globe.
I attended the 2010 Kumbh Mela in Hardiwar. Tens of thousands of holy men or Sadhus leave their caves and holy places of worship to attend. Also in attendence are millions of Hindu pilgrims. Families, holy men, and the common man all unite in this mass Hindu pilgrimage. The 2001 Maha Kumbh Mela was attended by around 60 million people.
After visiting the Kumbh Mela of 1895, Mark Twain noted:
It is wonderful, the power of a faith like that, that can make multitudes upon multitudes of the old and weak and the young and frail enter without hesitation or complaint upon such incredible journeys and endure the resultant miseries without repining.
The photographer Jay Dorfman wishes to thank Travelscope India for their devotion to all things spiritual and their excellence in the capacity of a travel agency in guidng me through this incredible event.
