Communities and Coal Mining in Colombia

Esther Rodriguez | Colombia

Maria, one of the community leaders of Boqueron, one of the communities just a few metres away from three of the biggest coal mines in Colombia.

Coal Mining in the departments of Cesar and La Guajira in Colombia have devastating effects on the communities living in the impact area: lack of access to land, lack of water, air pollution, respiratory diseases, extreme poverty... pristine green areas turned arid. Many of the communities had to be resettled, an ongoing process that can last over 15 years and normally result in divided communities and worse off than before. In some cases this had led to death threats and even killings. I had the opportunity to work with some of the Colombian NGOs and visit these communities to interview them how their day to day is next to the mine.
