This past year I had the opportunity to photograph Michael Ecker an 8 year old boy who was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease, Angelman Syndrome. Most who are effected by Anglemans have seizures, delayed development, trouble sleeping and difficulty talking. Michael's seizures are now under control, he attends school three days a week and with encouragement from his parents is learning to use the toilet. But to date, Michael hasn't spoken a single word. He may get frustrated and upset but he never stays angry long and with the help of a loving family Michael is improving each day.
For about 2 years I've been working with Courtney, a single mother, who is raising her daughter, Caroline, by herself after Caroline's father decided he didn't want to be a father. According to an article in the Los Angeles, a quarter of the children being raised in the United States are being raised by single mothers. Courtney works hard to juggle a full-time job and being a devoted mother to Caroline.
