We Are The BEST, focuses on a group of men and women who leave their homes in various parts of Thailand to come together to work and live in the Lak Si district of Bangkok, Thailand, during the rainy season. Their jobs revolve around keeping the streets and canals in the poorer areas of the district from flooding, along with some basic upkeep of the streets and bridges. They also clean out street level sewers and keep the canals free of floating vegetation. Though the nature of their work is difficult, dirty and often revolting, it is carried out with smiles and laughter. Leaving their families and homes for months at a time, shows an indelible sense of community, one that we could all strive to match.
I did not have as much time on this project as I would have liked, but I counted every second as a gift. I can only hope to one-tday match the kindness and generous nature of these wonderful people. Even though I attempted this work very early on in my career the memory will be one that always remains with me as the reason for continuing to share with people the parts of our world that they might not see otherwise. And to recognize in themselves the strength, despair, hope, sorrow and generosity that exists all around us.
