Decorating urban decay
Photographer: Alex Xenopoulos
Exhibit Title: Decorating urban decay
The economic crisis in Greece has hit the cities more than the rural regions. The combination of poverty, drugs, high property taxes, inability to redevelop or sell older properties, along with the presence of poor and illegal immigrants, prostitutes, drug addicts, homeless people, anti-establishment protesters and vandals has created an explosive mix in the historical center. The visual manifestation of those changes lies in old, boarded up buildings that are falling apart, sometimes occupied by rats and people in need, other times used at the risk of injury. Graffiti covers both abandoned and inhabited buildings. The "new ruins" are often found next to the ruins from ancient Greece and represent a more current, albeit less touristy view of the country. A vibrant city in decay with little hope of improving soon.
