CUBA: Threads of Hope & Renewal

LINDA HIRSCH | Cuba

Simon - Guía para el Museo del Holocausto/Holocaust Museum Guide

Linda J. Hirsch, Photojournalist and Psychologist will present images inspired by more than a decade of enabling Jewish/interfaith communities/individuals throughout Cuba. She has learned more about faith, family and community from her wide-ranging Cuban travels than any other.

A diversity of cubanos have shared their “lifestories” and gifts of music, photos and poetry with her. Although she has a cousin who has lived in Cuba for decades, HIRSCH has no Cuban roots. Her feeling of "ambos mundos" (rf: Hemingway) is profound.

Her award-winning images have been exhibited locally/internationally, provided backdrops for poetry readings in Jerusalem by Marjorie Agosin (Chilean-born human rights poet) and were commissioned as projection sets for “Cubania – Pagano y No”, a ballet, in collaboration with Cuban-born choreographer, Jose Mateo (BOS) and Cuban-born composer, Aruan Ortiz (NY).

She has often felt like a modern-day Anne Frank, bringing hope and light into the hearts of Jewish/interfaith communities throughout Cuba. She has formed strong Cuban connections, taught many how to “see deeply” and taught them lasting skills with which to inspire one another/others throughout the Diaspora, re: creating a lasting legacy.

CUBAN JEWISH LIFE: Threads of Hope & Renewal
* * *
This exhibit is inspired by my 12 years of documenting contemporary Jewish Cuban life within the broader context of “cubanidad” (2001-).

THREADS OF HOPE & RENEWAL
Once commercial craft initiatives were allowed by the Cuban government, I gathered and delivered $1500+ of fresh quilting fabric, sewing goods & craft supplies to the Centro Sefaradi (HAV, 2012), via a broad-ranging network.

I then delivered 90+ scarves to elderly craftswomen at the Centro Sefaradi, creating a personal connection & a metaphorical bridge across the "Dire Straits" between CU-US.

During my 6th, most recent visit to Cuba (December 2012), I photographed & interviewed elderly Jewish craftspeople & the teachers helping them to create work for sale to tourists. Proceeds enable the Centro Sefaradi to sustain/expand programs, staff & members.

LIFESTORIES
I’ve been enabling Jewish Cuban leaders & youths since 2006, to create simple, multi-media “Lifestories” via donated, digital technology. They are documenting & sharing experiences in/outside of Cuba, via email, Facebook & a new Cuban Jewish website, despite tight governmental restrictions.
